Participants

The survey was conducted in two sections of a tenth-grade general United States History course in a private, ninth through twelfth grade high school. A total of fifty-four students responded to the survey. All demographic information obtained from the survey was self-reported by the survey participants, and thus its precise accuracy cannot be guaranteed.

In this sample of 54 responses, students reported the following demographic information:

What is your gender?: Of 52 responses, 28 (53.8%) were male, 24 (46.2%) were female.

What is your age?: Of 54 responses, 35 (64.8%) were 16 years old, 14 (25.9%) were 15 years old, 3 (5.6%) were 17 years old, and 2 (3.7%) reported clearly false ages (making their actual ages unknown).

What is your race/ethnicity?: Of 54 responses, 46 (85.2%) were white/Caucasian, 1 (1.9%) was Latino/a, 1 (1.9% was Asian), 1 (1.9%) chose “Other,” and 5 (9.3%) said that they preferred not to answer.

Is English your first language?: Of 54 responses, 49 (90.7%) said yes, and 5 (9.3%) said no.

What is your current grade in history class?: Of 53 responses, 28 (52.8%) had As, 12 (22.6%) had Bs, 11 (20.8%) had Cs, 1 (1.9%) had a D, and 1 (1.9%) had an F.

How do you feel about the subject of history in general? (On a scale from 1 to 5, with 1 expressing dislike and 5 expressing like.): Of 54 responses, 4 (7.4%) rated their attitude toward history as a 1, 6 (11.1%) rated it as a 2, 15 (27.8%) rated it as a 3, 21 (38.9%) rated it as a 4, and 8 (14.8%) rated it as a 5.
